FITAA and Canada’s Foreign Influence Transparency Registry are in force. A covered new arrangement generally must be registered within 14 days. The published first deadline for a pre-existing arrangement that continues after commencement is October 3, 2026.
Not every cross-border engagement is registrable
The framework generally requires an arrangement with a foreign principal, a purpose of influencing a Canadian political or governmental process, and one or more activities listed by the Act. Ordinary sales, market research or market-entry support is not automatically registrable merely because a foreign client is involved.
Review political or governmental influence activity separately
If an engagement involves communications with Canadian public office holders, public communications intended to influence a political or governmental process, or relevant disbursements of money or things of value on behalf of a foreign principal, obtain project-specific Canadian legal advice before proceeding.
